It’s a situation many will know: you’re out for lunch with
your best mate when he drops the bombshell that you’re not the most important
person in his life anymore: he’s off to get married, and asks you to be there
for him on his special day. This is where we find Donald (Josh O’Connor) and
Patrick (Ben Hall) at the beginning of Freddie Hall’s short, Best Man. Only, things take an
unexpected turn when Donald delivers an odd request…
Donald’s unwavering cheerfulness in the face of Patrick’s
obstinate confusion constitutes the comedic core, but what helps Best Man amass a uniquely cinematic feel is winning composition and verve in the editing, something a disappointingly small
number of blockbuster comedies can
claim. It’s well-mounted, slyly acted and – without wishing to spoil anything –
saves its juiciest twist for last.
